Cutting Hay

It was a hard decision on to cut or not to cut.
The boys finally decided to cut two small fields.

It feels good to have that job started.

Wrong Place

Elsie went out to milk the goats the other night
and found Simon in the barn stall
where he wasn't suppose to be.

After they gently explained to him where he was actually suppose to be,
he turned around
and ducked back out the door he wasn't supposed to have come in
in the first place.

The Sign

We got a little closer today to what I want with the sign.
Ben and Hannah helped get this far.
Now I need to paint boards for the other side
and Elsie needs to buy short flowers.

A Busy, Sunny Day

Olive was born sometime early this morning.
Betsy is a good mama.

The boys stayed home to work today.
But they didn't get nearly as far as they had hoped to.
Ben and Hannah went out to do some fencing
and move the cows and calves to a different pasture.
It should have been a quick job.

Everyone is at the gate waiting to be let out.

And then Curly, the big, ugly, naughty bull tried to jump the fence.
He got himself high-centered and all tangled up.
Ben cut him free
and they moved him to a different pasture.

So then they had fence to fix
as well as having fence lines to put up
and move.

Little Polly just went to the new pasture
and laid down for a nap.

Polly

Polly joined the herd Sunday morning.
Now isn't that an adorable face!

The Newcomers

All of the newcomers seem to be settled in and happy.
They are going to get cold tonight.

The low is suppose to be 32*.
So we had to cover the garden too.

Very, very sad for May 13!

Moving The Broilers

It's been raining for three days.
But it was warmer yesterday
so it was time to move the chicks out of the water tanks in the shop
and over to the little barn.
Hannah does not appreciate these little beasts!
They will be much happier here
until they get moved to the chicken tractors
in a couple of weeks.

New Steers

Luke and Ben went to look at steers on Monday.

They decided to buy 19 head.

They were delivered during a lull in the rain today.

Ben hopes to fatten them up and head them out quickly.

This is something Ben's been wanting to do for quite awhile
and we are proud of him for pulling it off.

Quigley

"Q" names for calves are not easy to come up with.
But since we are doing the alphabet backwards this year
that's what we had to work with yesterday when this guy was born.

Cleo is his proud mama.
I don't think Ben has weighed him yet,
but he's a whopper!

Good-bye Piggies

They are gone!
The final four of the last litter of 13
were hauled to A & M this morning!

I went out to get pictures
but three of them had walked right into the trailer so I was too late.

Number 4 turned out to be a little more challenging
so I held the gate instead of taking pictures.

So two bucklings were sold this morning
and the pigs were hauled in.
The barn just got a lot quieter!

Spring Chill and Summer Heat

Paul was off Monday and Tuesday.
We worked outside all day both days
and nearly froze to death in the wind.
But we got the perimeter electric fence working again.

The new layers were moved to the chicken castle yard
so they could get out of the chicken tractors.
We changed part of their fencing too.

The post office called at 6:15 Tuesday morning
to say the broiler chicks had arrived.

After the rain last week...
and this today...

this should be turning green very soon!
