Stuck

Sometimes
things don't go
quite as you had planned
for them to go.
Ben was home for an hour this afternoon
and hoped to get a little work done in the field.

Jack to the rescue!

There was lots of slipping and sliding, hooking and unhooking,

but they got it out.

So Ben hooked up the cultivator again
and got a little more done
in the short time he was home.

The First of Spring Planting

Yes!

It's such a beautiful sight

to see planters out in the fields!

Ben planted Brad's front field yesterday.

Paul and Dennis both stopped after work to check on the progress.

How I love the busy farming days!

Gum Drop

It's been awhile since we've had a newcomer.

Luke came home for lunch
and to help in the delivery of Gum Drop.
Dilly wasn't thrilled with the idea
of getting up and taking care of him
after the whole ordeal.

But after some convincing
she took good care of the little guy.

A Naughty Dove

Dove and her mom went on a little stroll the other day.

Thankfully they were easy to get back in.

A Late Night With Dove

Ben and I check at 9:00, 9:30 and 10:00.
I finally told him to go to bed and I would get him if he was needed.
So I got him at 11:00.
We checked again at 11:30 and midnight.
Finally we decided it was time to get Luke and Hannah up and help the mama out.
(We decided to let Paul sleep
since he just got back from a couple of days of storm work.)
Dove arrived at 12:22 a.m.

She's a little girl at 78 pounds.
Her head looks like a little dear
and her body looks like a teddy bear with frost on her coat.

Chair Socks

I've spent millions
on buying the little felt pads
for our chair legs.

That is, until Renee sent me a picture this afternoon.
It took me a bit to figure out the beginning circle,
but now that I have that figured out,
our chairs will soon all be fitted with new colorful chair socks.
And our hardwood floors will thank me.

One chair done.
Seven to go.
But not tonight.

Bit-O-Honey

Bit-O-Honey!
When Ben, Hannah, and I went out to do the bedtime barn check
we knew it wasn't going to be bedtime as early as we had hoped.
Scarlet decided to have her calf instead.
Isn't she a cutie!

Three Seasons In One Day

The sky was shouting the warning yesterday morning.
About 11:00 the grass started to disappear.

By chore time there was a lot more of it than we wanted.

The wind was blowing too crazy-like to be able to measure it.

Our only casualty was the diningroom screen door.

I've never seen the winter sky the color of grey that it was this morning.
It was blowing, snowing, sleeting, hailing, and lightening all at the same time.

The hail HURT during chores!

And then the sky turned brown
and all of our lovely white snow
is covered in brown dirt
that has blown up from Texas.

Two More Calves

Two daytime calves!
Snickers was born to Lola Sunday afternoon.

And Skittles was born to Zelda Monday late morning.

All the cows and calves,
except Snickers, Skittles, and their moms,
were moved to the shed yesterday
so they can all get under shelter
when we get a snow storm later this week.

Calf Catch Up

Yikes,
I haven't been doing well
on keeping up to date
with the calves.
I forgot Miss Almond Joy.
She was born to Cleo on the 28th.
She was one of the very few born during the day
instead of the middle of the night.

Next was Twizzler.
He was born to Olympia on Saturday the 30th.
He was born at 7:00 p.m.
That is a very acceptable time.
But he immediately set about planning his escape route
so that's not so good.

Mr Wether was born sometime after midnight on April 1st.
I found him standing between the runway wall and a gate at 1:15 in the morning.
I'm not sure how he pulled that off,
but Navara was thrilled when we got him out of there and back with her.
He's the biggest one of the season so far at 106 pounds.
